Short breaks provide enjoyable activities for children and young people with disabilities, giving them a break from their main carer and offering carers respite. Every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential, including those with SEND, by developing skills, making friends, having fun, and gaining independence.

Local authorities in England must identify, evaluate, and consider the effects of caregiving on children and their families. They are responsible for commissioning breaks and support, not health services.

Young carers and those they assist will interact with various services. Therefore, collaboration among local authorities, NHS services, educational institutions, and third sector organizations is essential. The Tower Hamlets Hidden Heroes handbook is an excellent example of this collaboration.

Families with children aged 8 to 25 may be eligible for brief breaks if they are impacted by significant physical, learning, or sensory impairments, multiple severe disabilities, life-limiting conditions, complex physical health requirements, or autism.

Funding for assistance and respite services for young carers is inconsistent. Some programs are funded by local authorities, while others are supported by collaborations with Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) or through grants, charities, donations, and contributions from parents.

Commissioners must identify young carers and provide suitable assistance, focusing on respite care and support.

The Disabled Children’s Service primarily serves school-aged children, but referrals for pre-schoolers with substantial developmental delays are considered individually.

For alternative services, contact your local authority or ‘Local Offer’ Early Help or Locality Teams.
